5 year experience MLR, PhD or pass?

A question for experienced ones: right now, I’m attending ICCV and getting to know various researchers from FAANG. Many suggest I should pursue a PhD, saying that it’s almost essential, and they themselves entered the industry that way. Of course, they have already done theirs, so their opinion might be biased.
