Basic question about OCR/reading text off images

I'm trying to create a bulk processor that can read the dates off coins. I already have a trained CNN which is able to, given a photo of a coin, rotate it so the date text is facing up. What I've been unable to do is reliably train a neural network to read the date - I simply don't have enough data, and creating sufficient data will be very costly for me.
