Do most companies have “research” data scientist roles or is this FAANG only?

Basically, I’ve realized I’m not really interested in being a traditional data scientist, which is usually at the intersection of product analytics or BI. I’m more interested in the research heavy, highly technical data science roles, which most often require at least a masters degree and some research experience.
