Best ways to find a career mentor?

Im at the point in my career where there are a few directions I could go as a DS and struggling to find good advice from someone that has traveled this path. What are the best ways to find a career mentor outside of your current company?

Networking events seem promising but are so often just thinly veiled sales pitches for xyz co's saas product
