calculus based statistics vs applied statistics

Recently ive started taking a course on probability, and its very interesting because ive learnt to calculate the expected values and probabilities of various distributions by hand. However, im beginning to wonder whether this is a waste of time because i could have taken another course which explains only the higher level concepts in statistics and let the computer do the calculations for me.
