Can somebody provide me with a practical explanation of the mean average precision (mAP) evaluation metric?

I am working with object detection algorithms (I'm not a computer scientist), and have computed the precision, recall and therefore the mean average precision curve for about 450 test images. The resulting precision-recall curve looks something like this:

What is the practical application of the mAP? Is this saying that 77.6% of the time, the algorithm will correctly predict the right objects?
