Can someone explain, in simple terms, what does it mean the term "age" in a Neural Gas Network?

I am studying the topic of Neural Gas and at the beggining the process starts with two neurons connected by an edge displayed in a n-dimentional crossplot, with each axis of the crossplot representing an attribute/feature (for example house pricing, square feet,etc).
