I'm trying to understand what sort of background preparation in mathematics is sufficient to conduct publishable research in top venues.

Is calculus, linear algebra, engineering level probability & statistics and optimization sufficient ?

By **sufficient**, I mean the *bare minimum* you must know to get by and *you learn more things as you encounter them* or solve problems (**learning while doing**) without having to first prepare requisite background and then dive in.
