AI stuff didn't really hit 'mainstream' until relatively recently so I was really surprised by the new prompt to image technology.

Was the field expecting this technology by now or did people think it was a long ways away (20+ years)?

I know the field moves really fast these days, so I'm curious about what the research community's expectations were in the past.
