Data Science in F1 racing

Is anyone here working / has worked as a data scientist in an F1 team like Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 or McLaren Racing?

What’s your background like? Do you have an engineering background, maybe specialized in fluids? Or do you have a maths/stats/CS background, maybe specialized in simulations? How does your background affect the time-to-making-impact in the team? Did you struggle a lot trying to find your footing at the company?
