Data Science Path for a (Pure) Math Major

I regret not taking BS Statistics or BS Applied Math. If I want to become a data scientist, what should I do next? I'm from Pure Math. Should I take a master's degree in Statistics? Data Science? Or should I get employed in a data science-related job (any suggestions?) and work my way up by getting training and certificates related to data science? Most people say having experience first is better than taking a master's degree straight from uni.
