Dependency parser from scratch in Python

I’d like to challenge myself to write my own dependency parser for natural language (English) in Python.
I’m picturing taking in the sentence one word at a time and somehow working backwards to figure out the tree structure of the sentence.
Of course, it should start with tokenization. Perhaps part-of-speech tagging is a necessary next step, to attempt to group certain parts of speech that never dislocate from their complements, like “the”, or other words with predictable behavior, like “and” …
