I listened to a few podcasts - one with Sam Altman, another with John Carmack and they're both very gung ho about the prospects of near term AGI. Like within a decade or two.

This seems delusional to me. Right now the only known AGI is the human brain, and we have a very poor understanding of how that works. I don't think AGI will ever happen, or if it does it will be centuries from now.
