Extracting numbers from an employees working hours record.

Hello everyone, I am working on this image processing task where I want to use combination of openCV and deep learning digit classifier to extract numbers each employee worked.
Please give advice on how I can segment each digit from the square box, pass it through the model for classification.

Details:
1. X represents employee did not come to work.
2. Black long line is mostly on Sunday or public holiday.
