Framework for synthetic dataset generation (computer vision/object detection/image classification)

I'd like to fool around with making synthetic data for computer vision/object detection/image classification. There's a lot of options, and I can't find any comprehensive description of why I'd use one tool over another.

I'm experienced with Unity, so I would definitely be comfortable working in it. However, it doesn't really make a ton of sense to me - I don't need real time performance, physics, AI, etc. - so I would think it would make most sense to use …
