Have vague memory of waiting hours for computers to do number crunching--is this legit?

This is a ridiculous post but I don't know where else to put it.

In like \~2007 I had an internship on the finance/accounting side of a quasi-government agency. They dealt with a massive portfolio of assets that was hard to comprehend.
