I see some version of these two seemingly conflicting claims all time, even from the same people.

1. The average DS job only requires basic SQL and Python and a basic understanding of probability and statistics.
2. We are seeing a flood of applicants vying for data science jobs who possess only basic coding skills and a basic understanding of statistics, and this is going to kill the industry.
