How can I best set myself up for success switching careers to data science?

Basically the title.
Background - I have a masters in financial economics from a big state school and graduated with around a 3.5 gpa. Worked (and currently) working in a unrelated high finance position at a major company. None of my current skills transfer. In under grad I took 3 years of computer science but it was around Java/ C+. If I'm looking to make the jump what recommended steps should I take to best help my chances? Any boot …
