Is Data Science a hype or not? Does it really create value compared with other IT sectors such as software development and web development?

Some background. I live in Italy and have the chance to study data science in my masters (it's basically a lot of statistics and some programming), and i'm interested in it because it sounds very interesting to study data. Besides, its job prospects are quite good now in Italy/Europe, and I feel having some quatitive skills will be much more useful than theoritical knowledge.
