Is it common to change salaries when transitioning internally?

I’m having a discussion soon with the head of data science within my company about opportunities on the team. I have no clue if it will actually happen or not but I’m curious— is it common/customary to experience a salary change when changing teams? Or does every company do it differently? I’m quite certain I make less than data scientists in my company and my current team is a completely different department from this new one.
