Looking for mixed effects logistic regression references/examples (esp. exam/education based)

I'm currently doing so exam outcome modelling and have been fitting mixed effects logistic regression models (trying to capture some cohort effects and repeating students amongst other quirks). I have done a bit of searching but haven't really found references for the method or examples (both published or blog form) that line up well to what I'm doing.
