Portfolio when company projects are confidential

I often see that a portfolio is highly regarded. However the problem I am facing is that my projects are all done professionally. The companies I work(ed) for understandably do not want competitors to know what they are up to.

Are there valid alternatives to portfolios which don't comprise confidential information?
