SVD of Essential Matrix

I have seen that the SVD of the essential matrix can be used to determine the transformation between stereo pairs up to scale.

I wonder if anyone has seen a good intuitive or geometric explanation for why SVD can be used for this. I'm familiar with the general geometric interpretation of SVD as a rotation, scaling, rotation, but that does not seem consistent with how it is used here.
