The Emergent Abilities of LLMs - why LLMs are so useful

Emergence is the phenomenon of small changes to a system making large changes to its qualitative behavior. LLMs have been shown to display emergence by suddenly gaining abilities they were not trained to have as they scale.

But, are these abilities truly emergent, or is their appearance the result of something simpler?
