I feel as if I must be missing some obvious keyword in my searches for appropriate algorithms, was hoping to find a python implementation.

Trying to detect edges of particular objects in a photo, it sometimes works better to do so on RGB or HSV channels separately. Or to segment the image by pixel classification based on textures (or just quantize it based on texture, colour, etc.) and then go with those edges.
