What can I do to get a feel for data science? Also, what could I do to stand out in the field, as it is quite competitive?

I'm (21M) currently doing a BSc. Combined Major in Statistics and Economics, but I'm not sure of what I want to do in the future.

I really wanted to know if my subjects are useful for this field. I also wanted to know, considering my degree, are there any other alternative career paths that could suit me?
