I'm an applied scientist in the industry who occasionally published in venues such as ACL, NAACL, etc. Still, I never really understood what the membership status to ACL does. The only reason I would become a member for certain years is that I need to attend some \*CL conference that year (for which you pay the fees separately as well), and I didn't notice if the membership provides anything else.
