None of the statistics or statistical ML classes I’ve taken have given significant lip service to tree based models, but in the in 1 DS boot camp I did, they were mentioned extensively. Is there something to this anecdote, or am I just extrapolating from to small a sample? Why might classically trained statisticians and ‘ ML research ‘ people be less interested in these models than data scientists?
