Up until recently with projects like LaMDA and BlenderBot, the area of open ended conversational AI has either been completely untouched or kept purely as research. Very few of these projects have actually been used in applications for just having a two way conversation with a user.

For people in the field, why is this the case? Do companies not see a path forward with open ended dialogue systems?
