What can I do if I don't have professional experience using SQL?

I've been applying to Data Analyst/Scientist positions and a common requirement is experience using SQL. My last organization was fairly small and did not have a ton of data and so we didn't have any sort of data storage or database. I primarily did work with census and other publicly available data that I would pull, clean, and analyze using R.
