In your opinion how important is dev skills in DS?

I had a PM of a project where i was a DS where my job was to come up with the experiments and build the models, call me out on my coding skills. I do all my work in notebooks and he dint like that, he told me I had to improve my code.

I told him I dont have much experience as a software engineer, he said thats not an excuse.
